Crew 405 from Pleasant Hill in the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council is in Kenya to celebrate 100 years of Scouting. They will also begin the next centenary of Scouting by doing a “good turn” and helping a Kenyan Scout troop get organized.
These Kenyan Scouts will join us as we continue our Safari (Swahili for Journey) into Kenya’s game parks, a visit to the grave of Scouting's founder, Lord Baden-Powell, and onto a summit attempt of the 17,058 foot tall Mt. Kenya.
The are currently sending back progress reports to us:

We arrived two days ago to Nairobi after 40 hours of travel-- EVERYONE has been extraordinarily good natured and well. All the boys are traveling as if they have been doing so for years and years.
We are now in Nyeri at St. Mary's Boys School--We are lodged at a 9 acre school with 700 boys and a spare staff of teachers and groundskeepers. Last night we had 6 inches of rain but the temperature is still shirt sleeves and shorts. Not too hot--just perfect weather. Sites, sounds and smells are all memorable. Great adventure!!
This is a lifetime adventure and everyone is aware of it--Most of the boys are "logging" the sites and they all seem to be appreciating the fact that we are here.
We are now prepping for the 100 year anniversary and making arrangements to do what we can at the school and to prepare for the hike up Mt. Kenya.
So all well and I will write in a few days. Good news among all of the great sites--the 26 bags that were lost in transport arrived today. A glitch that makes all well.
We are well we will write again soon.

We. Are. All well and happy. We celebrated 100 years of scouting at the grave of !aden Powell with scouts and girl guides ages six to 21 adults young at heart
Kenya was not overly organized but had a lovely ceremony with representatives from Australia, Uganda Canada Burundi. Tanzania Italia. Kenya England Hong Kong Netherlands
USA and certainly more than I haven't named
We traded scarves patches and did some bonding with UK Italy and Australia.
With a great day for scouting the difficult decision of what to do in light of the buckets of rain and questionable conditions on mt Kenya. We have opted to not climb the mountain
The decision was difficult but Iam sOoooooo proud of our boys who felt concerned about disappointing the five Kenyan Scouts. We will put on a camporee scoutorama ish day to showcase as many of our scout skills and fun activities as possible. We will have a campfire as well.
The scouts are still thrilled and fortunate to have received equipment and the uniforms that made it possible for them to attend the centenerary.
So we will camp a few more days in Masai Maro and have nnight watches to gaurd against wild animals.
Hopefully the snorers will not get mistaken for predators.
A few fund raisers will cover the new costs Staying on at the school is not an option.
So much to tell you about the school. Brother Dominic is an extraordinary man and the school is a place full of exceptional souls.

Trip going well all healthy and safe. We had six days of rain in. Nyeri and they closed the road up to Mt Kenya. So not being able to climb we extended our safari time and went to the Masa Mara game park. Incredible animals camped with Masi guards at our site and had to keep the food safe from monkeys.
We are travelling back to Samburu to get back on our original schedule. Hopefully it has stopped raining in the north.
Several hundered Scouts and adult leaders from Mt. Diablo Silverado Council gathered at the top of Mt. Diablo for a sunrise celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the World Scouting movement. Organized by the Council International Committee, the event was opened with our Chairman Georoge Fosselius blowing the Kudu horn, the horn Lord Robert Baden-Powell used to call the first Scout campout at Brownsea Island in England.
